It is a fact, albeit not scientifically proven, that
As winter days shorten,
Consumption of red wine increases,
Resulting in seriously depleted cutlery drawers
Utensils are scraped, unnoticed, into compost buckets
And in the spring we find pickle forks poking up with the peonies
Henckels hunkered amongst the hyacinths
And, curiously, grandmother’s silver ladle, only slightly tarnished,
Nestled between the leeks and the garlic,
Anticipating the season’s first tureen of soup
